Screening of “Our Children,” co-written by Rokhl Oyerbakh

By Stephen Naron - May 31, 2019

Screening

Join us for a screening of Our Children (Unzere Kinder), a film co-written by Holocaust historian Rokhl Oyerbakh. Oyerbakh was a member of the Oyneg Shabes group that documented daily life in the Warsaw Ghetto and served as the first director of Yad Vashem’s Department for the Collection of Witness Testimony. Released in 1948 and based on "Krasrilvke Brent" by Sholem Aleichem, the film starred Polish-Jewish actors Shimon Dzigan and Israel Shumacher, and children who had survived the Holocaust. Our Children was filmed at an orphanage and school near Lodz, Poland, and highlights "an exchange of roles where [Dzigan and Shumacher] become the children's audience. Reversals continue during the performers' visit to the children's residence, as the children teach adults about the healing possibilities of music, dance and storytelling."

Sharon Pucker Rivo, Executive Director and Co-Founder of The National Center for Jewish Film and faculty NEJS Dept., Brandeis University, will introduce the film and moderate a talkback session following the film with a panel of scholars including:

Samuel Kassow, Trinity College
David Roskies, Jewish Theological Seminary of America
